James Larry Akins' Obituary
James Larry "Catfish" Akins, 81, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at his home. He was under the care of Big Bend Hospice. Born in Brooksville, Georgia on April 26, 1941, he was the son of the late Grover M. and Sibyl Akins. He is also preceded in death by his brother Rex Carlton Akins. He moved to the Tallahassee area in 1942. He attended Leon High School and joined the United States Navy. He joined the Navy on December 12, 1958 served until March 20, 1962. He returned to the Tallahassee area and worked in the restaurant business.
He was the owner of Captain Louie’s Galley for several years. He also managed the Brown Derby in Tallahassee and Gainesville, FL, Quincy’s Restaurant in Ocala, FL and Thomasville, GA. He then worked for Reinhart Foods until his retirement in 2013. He enjoyed fishing with his son, playing golf, and playing a hand of cards. But most importantly he loved spending time with his family and being called “Happy” by his great grandson Case Joiner.
Survivors include his son, Craig Akins (wife, Pat), granddaughter, Kayce Joiner (husband, Cole)
great grandson, Case Joiner, nephews, Phil Akins (wife, Laura), Paul Akins (wife Lisa), and Perry Akins. Also included are three great nieces, Danielle, Tayler and Emily Akins. Special friends, Georgianna and Greg Bracko and Roger and Sally Collins.
A service is 1:00 PM, Friday, December 30, 2022, at Tallahassee National Cemetery,
5015 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee, FL 32311.
