William M. Runkle's Obituary
William Marion “Bill” Runkle, 87, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on July 28, 2024, after a brief illness.
Born on October 9, 1936, in Chattahoochee, Florida, Bill was the beloved first born son of Elsie (Pitts) and William Marion Runkle. A graduate of Chattahoochee High School, he enlisted with the Air Force, serving as a Radio Operator in Germany. Upon his return, he graduated from Florida State University and took a sales position with Allstate Insurance Company in south Florida and after several promotions, became a District Sales Manager. Wanting to live closer to his roots, he moved his young family to Tallahassee and enjoyed 27 years with the Florida Department of Insurance before retiring.
His zest for life, energy and vibrant personality were evident to all who knew him. An avid Florida State Seminoles fan, Bill closely followed FSU football, basketball, and baseball with enthusiasm. He loved working out at the gym, working in his yard, and spent countless hours riding his bicycle in the woods; a testament to his love for the outdoors. Fresh and saltwater fishing as well as scouting and hunting with friends and family were a big part of his life.
A devout Christian, Bill’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He led his family in prayer and song, especially “This is the Day”. He greeted each day with joy and gratitude and was known for his positive spirit. He brightened the day with cheerful quips, including “Happy Day!” and “Tutti Frutti!”
Bill is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 70 years, Lynn; his brother Terry; children William (Beverly), Sherri (Mark) Deal, and Scott (Linda); nephews Daniel “Brett” (Jane) and Chris “Kevin” (Melinda). He is also survived by grandchildren Natasha (Sean), Jason, Matt (Allison), Lindsay, Chase (Ashley), and Kelsey (Chad); great-grandchildren Trevor, Cameron, Hannah, Mason, Addie, Abby, Max, Reese, Colson, and Avery; great-nieces Sarah, Grace, Harper, and Emily; and great-nephew Jacob.
Bill and Lynn’s home was always the center of family gatherings for birthdays, holidays and special occasions. Bill’s legacy of love, faith, and joy will be deeply missed but forever remembered by his family and friends. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who “njoy”-ed knowing him.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 17th at 2pm, with a visitation one hour prior at 1pm; Lifesong Chapel, 20 S. Duval St., Quincy, FL.
