Terry D. Smith's Obituary
Terry Douglas Smith died peacefully on July 25, 2026 in the care of Big Bend Hospice.
Terry was born on December 2nd, 1944 in Lima, Peru, land of the Incas, where his family lived for more than 16 years. He was the son of Norman E. Smith and Juanita T. Smith, long-time residents of Tallahassee.
He received his AA degree in computer programming from Miami-Dade Junior College, then later moved to Tallahassee, where he worked as a draftsman with the land surveying and engineering firm of Broward Davis & Associates for many years.
Terry was a photography enthusiast who spent many hours filming and photographing the critters that inhabited his wooded back yard, including a mating pair of owls that returned to his massive oak tree year after year. He was fascinated by animals, and a devoted cat lover, adopting several over the years.
He loved to fly and established a free-lance aerial photography business, which provided large-format aerial photographic presentations for use in property boundary disputes in the courts.
He ended his career working for the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection as a cartographer, mapping state lands and properties, and helping to develop software.
Terry will be remembered for his clever intelligence, generosity, and kindness of spirit.
He is survived by his sister, Linda Kay "Lin" Smith, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, and cousins residing in Boise, Idaho and Yukon, Oklahoma.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 11am at Roselawn Cemetery, 843 Piedmont Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32312.
