Shay Filer 's Obituary
Shay Filer was a non-conformist and a colorful character to say the least. If you met her you didn’t forget. She prided herself on being the life of the party and was always the center of attention. Those who knew her best will remember her in her cozy place in the country surrounded by her rescue dogs and eclectic collection of wall hangings and knickknacks.
She was a committed advocate for animals, especially dogs. She (mis)spent her youth between New York and Spain and ended up settling down in Tallahassee in the early ‘70s to be close to her mother. She told a great story…many of them were even true. For most of her life she wore rose-colored glasses to match her red hair.
She was a great cook, an avid reader and card player. Her careers spanned from dog groomer to photographer to history professor. She was a proud mother and grandmother and loved her sisters and nephews very much. Her fondest memory was of trips to Panama City Beach with her son and grandchildren.
She had a large and diverse circle of friends and admirers. If you are one of them and would like to come and share a story about your times with her a memorial will be held at her home at 1900 Skebak Lane on Sunday, June 12 at 2:00PM. She would think you were in the wrong place if you wore anything formal. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution in her honor to the Leon County Animal Shelter.
