Nancy Jean Smith's Obituary
Nancy J. Smith (Downs), 87, of Tallahassee, FL, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.
Nancy was born and raised in Danbury, CT. Early in her career she worked as a labor and delivery nurse. After raising her children, she worked at the Stony Hill Inn and the Savings Bank of Danbury.
She married her first love, Maurice William (Bill) Downs, in 1959. They were married for twenty-five years and had four children. After Bill’s passing, she married James Smith of Bethel, CT. They relocated to Edenton, NC where they enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. Nancy also lived in Abilene, TX before moving to her final home in Tallahassee, FL.
Nancy cherished her best friends and time spent with her church family. Her strong faith guided and provided hope throughout her long life. She found much enjoyment in shopping, sunshine, and her love for swimming. Nancy will be remembered for her love of laughter and easy-going spirit.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, George T. and Dorothy (Davenport) Casazza; her husbands, Maurice William Downs and James Smith; her brothers, Terrence McSherry and Donald Casazza, and son-in-law Harry Schueschner.
She is survived by her four children, Christopher Downs (GA), Kimberly Schueschner (CT), Pamela Dobert (FL), Heidi Mercer (TX), her aunt, Elizabeth (Casazza) Comcowich, sister in law, Geri Werrman, sons-in-law, Danny Mercer and Mark Dobert, daughter-in-law, Jodi Downs, her grandchildren, William Schueschner, Samantha (Schueschner) and Jessica Halas, Amie (Schueschner) and David Mumma, Matthew and Jonathan Dobert, Conner, Seth, and Aidan Downs, Zachariah, Jacob, Hannah, and Benjamin Mercer, great grandson, Jared Mumma, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Her children and grandchildren will always treasure their relationships and her unconditional love.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 17, 2022, 2:00pm at Timberlane Church of Christ, 3569 Timberlane School Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312. Donations may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital or Big Bend Hospice. Please share a memory or note of sympathy at www.lifesongfunerals.com
