Mike Smitherman, 71, of Carrabelle, FL died on Sunday, December 29th at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Born on July 24, 1953, in Chattahoochee, FL, he was the youngest son of the late Daughty Williams Smitherman and Murk Lee Smith Read Obituary
Mike and I worked together years ago at Florida State Hospital. I always said he was the best Social Worker I knew. He was such an advocate for persons with mental illness and worked diligently to improve their lives. I always considered him to be a great person and a great friend. My heart and prayers go out to his family.
This one was hard! Scott and I were so saddened to hear of the passing of Uncle Mike. Though we haven’t seen or talked in awhile I always remember his kindness as a child. He always had a crazy story or a smile to share with me. Fond memories for sure. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Love Donna and Scott Michi and family.
Mike was one of my best friends throughout our lives. I loved him like a brother. I always said that he was the funniest person I had ever met. We shared a lot of crazy times growing up in the Hooch. We attended school from the 1st grade all the way through the 12th grade. Mike, I will surely miss you and that great sense of humor you had. Wished I could have seen you one more time but you will be remembered through your siblings and your girls and their children. The long and winding road.
Mr.Mike is an amazing man. I was just young graduating high school and he took me under his wing at a grocery store. After working with him for a while he became like an uncle to me , his daughter and his grandbabies were his absolute favorite, we would always talk about family. You will be missed Mr.Mike
I haven’t seen Mike since the early 70’s but we kept in touch periodically on Facebook which was always a way to connect to our past. We both played on a local softball team which was made up of a bunch of local boys while he was in college and that in itself was a memory to have. In our younger days we use to caddy together at the local golf course and had some good times and that is where he learned how to play golf and we also competed together cutting lawns of some of the people in Chattahoochee to make some extra money. Life was simpler back then with no cell phones, no crime and no internet. We didn't realize it until later on in life that growing up in a small town like Chattahoochee would shape our future and bond our lives. Mike would invite me to his mother’s house sometimes and she made some of the best homemade hamburgers that I have ever tasted in my life and we would always end up talking about our dreams and aspirations. Mike was an avid reader and I was happy to know that he raised such a wonderful family together with his wife Jan. I will miss him dearly with his quick wit and humor. Godspeed to you my childhood friend…your memory will live on with the people who knew you from a young boy to the man you became………I will say a prayer for you….Lewis Alongis.....
