Katy and Stephanie, I am so sorry for your loss. I will always have fond memories of Mary's smile, her kindness and compassion, and the pleasant conversations we shared as neighbors. I was deeply saddened to hear this news and will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.
To the family of Mary Smallwood. Mary's strength and knowledge was used only to do good in this world and she did well at doing good. As DEP Secretary, I was so pleased to have someone as thoughtful, caring, bright and determined as Mary. The world will miss her, but I can see she left two strong and caring daughters in her place.

Mary was a dedicated volunteer with the Leon County Humane Society for several years. She was loved by the people of the organization and absolutely adored by the kitties. Mary was a beautiful person with a caring heart and a great laugh. Mary's had an impact on many and she will be dearly missed.
Mary was among the kindest souls I ever knew. I first knew her as a brilliant lawyer. Then, we became friends. And I learned about her sister, her daughters (and how wonderful she knew they were), her friendship with Vicki, St. Marks Wildlife Refuge, the Humane Society, her belief that Mayor Gillum was destined for bigger things, and all sorts of things that had little or nothing to do with our profession. And never, never, never, did Mary complain about what burdens life gave her. A true class act, and a beloved friend.
I am so sad to hear this. I worked with Mary at DEP when she was a young attorney. I had much respect and admiration for her. May God bring comfort to her family at this time.
Always ready with a smile for staff and welcoming visitors, Mary was a special asset for St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Her love for animals was caring and it was hard not to want to adopt all of them. I missed seeing her and hoped she was recovering. I am sad that I can't attend her service, but I'll be working at St. Marks and remembering Mary and how much she loved Florida.
