Larry James Overton's Obituary
Larry James Overton, 78, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on November 3, following a brief illness.
Larry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dianne Parrish Overton, children Jason and Joel (Lauren), two grandchildren, Quinn Overton and Lyndon Overton, and his brother Ray.
Larry was born on June 13, 1945, in Pensacola, Florida. He graduated from Pensacola High School then moved to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University on a football scholarship. He earned both Bachelors and Masters degrees from Florida State.
Larry worked his way up the ladder at the State agency formerly known as the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS). At HRS, he was in charge of Medicaid policy as well as aging and adult services, mental health, children’s medical services and developmental services. He served during the Administrations of Governors Askew and Graham, and in 1980 Governor Bob Graham appointed Larry as Deputy Secretary of HRS.
Five years later, Larry departed state government and established the governmental affairs consulting firm, Larry J. Overton and Associates, a full service state government relations company representing an array of clients before state agencies, the Governor’s office, the Cabinet and the Florida Legislature. The firm became the top “go to” healthcare firm for any and all issues healthcare related. Both of his sons, Jason and Joel, worked in the firm until Jason departed to attend NYU. Joel continued working with him until Larry retired several years ago, leaving Joel to run the firm. Many lawmakers and fellow lobbyists recalled that Larry was regarded as a highly principled, honorable and effective governmental affairs advocate.
Larry loved FSU sports and was always in attendance at home games and many away games. He was a founding member of the FSU Varsity Club.
At Larry's request, no public services will be held. The family will hold a private memorial service to celebrate his life at a later date.
Donations in Larry’s name may be made to the Leon County Humane Society, St. Francis Wildlife Association or the charity of your choice.
Larry was a wonderful husband, Dad and Papa. We will love and miss him forever.
