June McManus McLaurin's Obituary
June McManus McLaurin, 81, made a peaceful transition to her heavenly home on February 13th, 2023 after an extended illness. She was under the care of Big Bend Hospice House, Tallahassee, Fl.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mac and Molly McManus, her brother Jimmy McManus, and her sister Jane Schneck. She is survived by her husband of 60 years David McLaurin, her wonderful children and grandchildren, Sheila Simpson daughter, and grandchildren, Edward, Parker, and Molly, her daughter Wendy Kerr, husband Rob, and granddaughter Chloe, her son Chris McLaurin and her younger brother, Danny McManus of Fayetteville, NC.
There was nothing more important in her life than her family. She loved them all dearly and had a special relationship with each of them. She was beautiful both inside and out and had many special friends.
She was born on November 4, 1941, on a small tobacco farm in NC. Growing up she led a simple life and learned the value of hard work and her dad taught her the value of a dollar. This served her well in later years as the owner and operator of Furniture Showcase & Design.
She met her husband, David, on a blind date and even though she played hard to get, when he caught her he held on for 60 years. During the early years of her marriage, she was a mother, housewife, loving companion, soccer mom, and taxi. Together she and her husband David raised three exceptional children who also learned the value of hard work and accountability. They work together at The Zimmerman Agency. As David’s career grew he traveled a lot so she held the family together at home and made it possible for him to support the family.
Her mid life crisis came at 40 years of age and being an empty nester she decided to explore her dream of opening a furniture store that offered the finest furniture and unusual décor items with professional design services. Therefore in 1984 she opened Furniture Showcase & Design! Her customers loved her, she could make friends with anyone and that sincere desire to help people make the right choices for their home made for a successful business. One customer said she had the unique ability to combine their personality and décor to get the right look. After 21 years, she retired and the business was kept in the family with her daughter Wendy acquiring the store in 2005.
Exciting plans were made for retirement. A home was built in western NC and she had the joy of furnishing it and picking out all the colors and décor. But plans were short lived when in 2010 she developed a neuromuscular disease that would take away her mobility and her retirement goals. Together she and David made the best of this change in their lives and took care of each other. Her favorite activities became putting puzzles together, getting her hair done each Friday, (thanks to Lisa Chase) and Friday night out with the “Misfits” (her Seminoles, Gators, and Bulldogs friends).
In spite of her physical limitations, she was a faithful attendee at Killearn Methodist Church, and her Clay Sunday School Class. Her faith was strong, and she was well prepared to meet her Lord and Savior.
Special thanks to her caregiver “Angel” Crossley and to Louise Street who was part of her household for many many years. Also, to her special friends (you know who you are).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Killearn Methodist Church at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name can be made to Missions at Killearn Methodist Church or Big Bend Hospice House.
To be loved, you must give love, and June McManus McLaurin accomplished that goal in her life!
