Uncle Sam was always generous with his time and had a wonderful sense of humor. He and Aunt Janne welcomed me to Tallahassee whenever I would visit and stayed for dinner with Janne's parents (my grandparents) where we would catch up, tell stories, listen to Sam's thoughts on life and history, and be reunited as a loving extended family. Sam would set up his camera and tripod each time to take group pictures. In quieter moments, Sam shared perspectives on his own experiences, which helped to fill in some missing pieces for me and for which I will be forever grateful. In recent years, we were able to keep in touch with Sam on video calls, and it was reassuring to see him and know that he was doing so well in Janne's care. I will miss you, Uncle Sam.
