Janis Martin Cook's Obituary
Janis Cook, 85, of Tallahassee, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2023, in her son's home with family at her side.
Janis was born on Nov 20, 1937, the only child of John Madison Martin and Betty Lucille ((White) Martin in Pavo, Georgia. This did not impact her life as her father proudly showcased his beautiful daughter daily in his truck drives around town. Her mother allowed her to stay home and help on the family's farm making her childhood one to write books about.
Through her many years in Tallahassee, Janis worked for the Leon County school system and multiple local hotels doing what she did best; feeding folks and making them comfortable and loved.
Janis was an amazing mother, singer and cook. Most family and friends have wonderful stories about simply being loved on by Janis, singing with her, or enjoying her delicious biscuits. She was beloved by family, friends, Publix employees and pretty much everyone that met her.
She is survived by son, Michael Hurshel Cook, his wife, Mary Monica Cook, and their children, Christopher Stotter, Mary Stotter-Cook and Palmer Cook; and son, John Carmon Cook, his wife Neeley Meggs Cook, Carmon's children, Madeline Cook and Mason Cook, and Neeley's son Jackson Knight.
Janis was preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie Hershel Cook. By her own merits she then reunited with and married childhood sweetheart, Bertice Dale Spooner, who also preceded her in death.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at Chapel Hill Baptist Church, 3413 Old Bainbridge Rd., Tallahassee, FL. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. A private interment will be held at the Tallahassee National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to www.ability1st.info/ or bigbendhospice.org
