Gary Schaffer's Obituary
On Saturday, July 1, 2023, Gary quietly passed at home with his loving wife, Susan, by his side. They were married on January 4, 2005, and spent 34 adventurous years together. He was born June 5th, 1953 in Phoenix, Arizona.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his six children, David A. Schaffer (Marilyn), Shawn R. Martin (Gary), Christy L. Castleberry (Scott), Travis J. Schaffer (Kristen, fiancé), Robert R. French II (Lisa, fiancé), and Stephanie M. Bergozza (Zale); sixteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and his extended family, Bryce and Gina Blair.
In addition, Gary has six siblings, Connie Sirks (Bill), Robert Hamrick (Gwen), David Hamrick (deceased), Nancy Schaffer-Heath (deceased), Debbie Schaffer-Awalt (deceased), and Richard Morrow Sr. (Arika). He also had and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Gary began carpentry at a young age, working alongside his father and grandfather, and later owning his own business in Arizona, working with some of the most elite builders in the Phoenix area. In 1983, he settled in Tallahassee and opened G. A. Schaffer Construction, Inc., providing master-carpentry work with numerous builders in the area for the last 27 years. He produced some of the most beautiful trim work, staircases, and custom woodworking pieces, including his signature work, crown mold bells.
Gary was a master mechanic of carpentry, taking the most challenging project and finding a way to complete it. He never hesitated to try something unique for his customers and was willing to think outside the box. Gary always took a moment to share his knowledge if someone was interested in carpentry. He took his work seriously but never missed a chance to have fun, like dumping ice water on his work crew on hot days.
Gary loved telling jokes and pulling pranks on his family and friends. One of his favorite past-times was sitting on the back porch with his morning coffee, watching the wildlife. Gary also loved surf-fishing, visiting Daytona for Bike Week, and outdoor motor recreation, which started in his younger days in Arizona. He enjoyed traveling and just exploring different places.
Gary will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, July 29th from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Schaffer home.
