Florence "Ditti" Theresa McCutchen RN, MSN's Obituary
Florence, from a young age, shared not only her name, “Florence Nightingale: The Lady with The Lamp,” but also her passion as a nurse who gave comfort and care to others. After graduating from Holy Name Hospital, she received a fellowship to the University of Pennsylvania where she received her BSN. She worked in clinics, hospitals and nursing homes across the country. While working in the Denver City Jail she was asked her name; she told them to remember her as “Florence Night in Jail”.
She chose to serve her country during the first Gulf War by joining the United States Air Force. After eight years she was reluctantly, honorably discharged with the rank of captain. She continued her love of the military by working in the Veterans Administration while continuing her nursing education.
After achieving two masters degrees from Florida State University as a nurse practitioner and a nursing educator, she decided to share her passion and knowledge of nursing with others. For over 13 years she inspired and educated many new nursing students at Southern Regional Technical College (formerly Southwest Georgia Technical College). The majority of those years, while educating the future, she was also in a pitched battle with stage IV metastatic breast cancer. She retired from her love of educating in June of 2020, and seceded from the battle on November 27, 2020 to return to her beloved husband of 48 years.
She is survived by her sister, three children, three grandchildren and a great granddaughter, as well as the countless number of nurses now sharing their light with the world.
A service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 4th, at the Tallahassee National Cemetery. Social distancing and masks are required at the Cemetery.
