Emily Gay Groom's Obituary
It is with great sadness we announce that Emily Gay Groom passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones on January 30, 2025, at the age 79.
Emily was born on August 13, 1945, in Thomas County, Georgia to the late Willis “Shorty” and Anne Gay. Raised in Boston, she was one of ten children (William Gay, Harry Gay, Annette Dupree, Frank Gay, Alfred Gay, Mary Whitehead, Barbara Hadden, Jane Snyder, and Annie Driggers). As a teenager, the family moved to Tallahassee, Florida. Emily graduated from Leon High School. While in high school she began working as a part-time teller with First National Bank (a.k.a. Capital City Bank), where she was employed for forty-nine years. After retiring Emily became a full-time grandmother.
Emily was a quiet person; a woman of integrity and kindness, her generosity knew no bounds. A Christian woman who knew she was more blessed to give than to receive. Although Emily’s physical presence may no longer grace our lives, her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. May her memory be a blessing and may we carry forth her legacy of love and compassion in all that we do. As you continue to worship Jesus up there, dear Emily, your light will forever shine brightly in our hearts.
Emily was married to Claude “Sonny” Groom for fifty-eight years. Together they raised three boys: Terry Groom (wife, Dorenda) of Monticello, Stephen Groom of Tallahassee, and Jeffrey Groom (wife, Marisa) of Tallahassee. She also had six grandchildren: Sierria (husband, Carson), Eric, Caleb, Ian, Wyatt, Finley, and Connor. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
A Celebration of Life to honor the life of Emily will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Capital Heights Baptist Church located at 7150 Apalachee Parkway, Tallahassee. The family will receive friends one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Big Bend Hospice, The Children’s Lighthouse, or Capital Heights Baptist Church.
