Eligia Mafalda Sperry's Obituary
Eligia Sperry, of Havana, Florida, born in 1927 in Trieste, Italy, passed away quietly in her sleep on February 24, 2021. She is survived by her brother Silverio Zaccaria and his wife Silva of Trieste, Italy, her son Zaccaria Sperry and his wife Carol, her daughter Janet and her husband Wendell Lyon of Havana, Florida, and her daughter Diane Schultz of Great Falls, Montana. She is further survived by her grandchildren Alijah and Jessica Rand of Bainbridge, Georgia, Jessie, Brian, Bobby, and Angela Schultz of Great Falls, Montana, and her great grandchildren Nashawn, Silas, and Emory Rand of Bainbridge, Georgia.
Eligia married a young and handsome American Army officer, John Sperry, who had liberated her city during the second world war in Trieste, Italy. They remained in Italy and raised their family in Verona before moving to Denver, Colorado in 1959.
Eligia was very proud to be an American citizen. She cherished her freedoms in the United States in comparison to the war years in Italy in the 1930s and 1940s when she was forced into labor by the Nazi occupation in order to receive her ration card. She came from a strong and silent generation that believed in the vast opportunities that America provided for her and her family and became a successful restaurant owner.
