Dorothy Dean Smith's Obituary
Dorothy D. Smith, 91, passed away July 7, 2026, at home under the care of Big Bend Hospice and surrounded by her family.
She was born April 28, 1935, in Jackson County, Florida to James Wesley and Esther McAlpin Darby. After high school graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Buford, who survives her. Dorothy worked in her father’s business, Darby Construction Company, for many years. She was also employed by the state of Florida as an accountant and for many years worked as an office manager for Gulf Steel.
Dorothy was a lifetime member of Santa Clara Baptist Church in Quincy where she taught both children and adult Sunday School classes. She was an asset to the choir with her beautiful soprano voice.
She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, was a great cook and immensely enjoyed fishing on the Ochlocknee River with Buford where they caught bream and catfish.
She was predeceased by her parents and a baby brother.
Dorothy was beautiful, inside and out and was loved by everyone. Cherishing her memory are her husband, Buford; her children, Sue Anne Kever (Don), Kirby Smith (Ann) and Benjamen Smith (Christy); her brother, Jim Darby (Angie); grandchildren, Wyndi Kever, Joshua Kever, Leah Houston (Sam), Waylon Smith (Kim) and Darbi Smith; two great-grandchildren, Mason Smith (Abigail) and Gavin Smith and one great-great grandchild, Claire Smith.
Visitation with the Smith family is Friday, July 10 at 10 A.M. at Santa Clara Baptist Church in Quincy with her funeral service following at 11 A.M. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery, Quincy, will immediately follow the service.
The family invites those who wish to make memorial contributions to the air conditioning fund of Santa Clara Baptist Church, 841 E. Jefferson Street, Quincy, Florida 32351.
