Carol Anne Knox's Obituary
Carol Anne Knox passed from this life peacefully at home on November 6, 2021, surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her spouse Sylvia W. Smith, her older brother Richard Michael Knox, as well as in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Carol was born on March 29, 1955 in Tampa, Florida to Rev. James Lloyd and Edith Laney (Strawn) Knox. She resided in West Palm Beach, Lakeland, Costa Rica, Cuba, Argentina, and Miami before settling in Tallahassee, Florida. Carol graduated from Miami Senior High School and Florida State University.
Carol helped establish two legendary music groups - the Rolling Mothers Review and later the capital city's first all female rock band - Wanda and the Iguanas. Playing, performing, and appreciating music was a constant source of joy in her life. She was also a devoted supporter of art and performance, a skilled volleyball coach, an avid hiker, and a dedicated register of voters.
In 1991, Carol entered her lifelong relationship with Sylvia W. Smith, who she legally married in Baltimore, Maryland on September 21, 2013. Carol introduced Sylvia to the world of travel, and over the years they spanned the globe visiting family and friends, and exploring cultures. Together they established a home, cared for pets, planted flowers, hosted gatherings, sought justice and equality for themselves and others, and experienced the joys, trials, and lessons of life.
Carol was ever present for the people in her life, including her parents and brother. She also loved visiting the natural places that inspired her passion for protecting the environment and wildlife. In 2019, she retired from her leadership position at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission where she championed statewide efforts protecting manatees, turtles, panthers, and bears. Whether it was work, volleyball, music, marriage, or planning travel, Carol led with warmth, humor, a love of nature, a discerning mind, and a free and giving spirit. A celebration of her life is being planned with details to be announced soon.
A memorial gathering is planned for 2:30 PM on Sunday, March 20th, 2022 at the M.H. Forke Lodge at Sherlock Springs 2335 Bloxham Cutoff Road Crawfordville, Florida 32327. The family, would like all that can attend, to join them at a reception with music following the service. Please honor her memory by contributing to the National Parks Conservation Association or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
