Betty Sue Owens' Obituary
Betty Sue Owens passed away at 77 on the 31st of August 2023. She always went by ‘Sue,’ she never felt like a ‘Betty.’
Sue was born in Bainbridge, Georgia on the 24th of October 1945, to Bessie and Levy Augustus Smith. Sue met her husband, George Owens Jr., of Quincy, Florida on March 16, 1962,. They quickly fell in love and married on the 16th of June 1962. Sue and George had two sons, George “Trey” Owens III and Russell “Rusty” Owens.
Sue was the glue of the family who kept the Owens men in check. She did this in their homes in Quincy and during a brief stint living in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s. During this period, Sue fostered a love for travel. She went to Greece, Spain, Egypt, and Saudi.
She passed down her stories to her granddaughters, Lauren Owens, Hannah, and Hope Owens. Sue extended her grandmotherly love to her granddaughters, Brienna Rowan (Will) and Brittany Mercer, and grandson, Derek Moss Jr., and her ten great grandchildren. Sue loved her grandchildren; she passed on her enthusiasm for living life to the fullest to them. Sue loved drinking salty margaritas with her daughters-in-law, Allison and Cassie. A much-needed beverage being married to an Owens man. [Happily married!] Sue loved sitting on a porch swing waiting for rain with a cup of coffee on the side.
Sue’s laughter and love made her an essential part of the Owens family. She will be remembered by those who loved her for her smile, gift of gab, superb cooking, and curled blonde hair. This loss runs deep. It is going to be difficult for her family to find a place to put all the love they had for her, but grief is a reminder of all of the unexpressed love we have for our loved ones.
Sue leaves behind to mourn her loss, her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and her beloved brother, Ronald Colbert Smith his wife, Pam, nephew Ronald Colbert (Cole) Smith Jr., as well as many nieces and nephews.
We welcome anyone who wishes to celebrate the life of Sue Owens to join us at Antioch Baptist Church, 284 McCall Bridge Road, Quincy, Florida, on the 30th of September from 11 AM to 2 PM. Lunch will be served.
Let Sue’s memory be a blessing to all who had the pleasure of knowing such a beautiful spirit; may she rest in peace.
