Benjamin "Ben" Wayne Powell's Obituary
Benjamin "Ben" Wayne Powell passed away on November 5, 2023, at the age of 71 in Quincy, Florida. He was born on July 9, 1952, in Duncanville, Texas. Ben is survived by his beloved wife, Katharine "Kathy" Powell, and his children, Becki Powell, Justin Powell, and Sarah "Sally" Powell McDonald (Christopher). He is also survived by his sister, Mary Bea Queller (Mike), and a long list of loving family members and friends. Ben was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Marie Roberson.
Ben's life was centered around his faith. He was unfailingly kind and incredibly generous. He was a vessel of God's Grace, touching the lives of those around him, as well as the lives of many people who never got the chance to meet him directly.
Ben attended Duncanville High School and was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin University. (We won't mention the other universities he attended before he decided to focus on school and not just on fun.) In his career as a forester and real estate broker, Ben was the proud owner of The Woodlands Company, Inc. and Woodlands Real Estate Company. Later in life, he was called to serve as the Director of Dogwood Acres Summer Camp and Retreat Center. Ben's dedication to the Lord was evident through his incredible work ethic and his dedication to his church, First Presbyterian Church of Quincy, where he was a Ruling Elder. Ben also served the Presbytery of Florida as a Pulpit Supply Pastor, which he enjoyed immensely because it introduced him to so many amazing congregations (and allowed him the opportunity to discuss C.S. Lewis often).
Outside of his professional and religious commitments, Ben enjoyed cooking, being outdoors, really good music, his cat (Knick Knack), and spending time with his family and friends. His hobbies were an illustration of his Christian love and his appreciation for the simple joys in life. In the end, he fought as hard as he could to be able to take care of his bride, Kathy, who he loved more than breath.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection to celebrate the life of Benjamin Wayne Powell will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at 3:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Quincy. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Old Philadelphia Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Dogwood Acres at 3320 Harmony Rd., Chipley, FL 32428 or by visiting www.dogwoodacres.org.
