Gary Van Ostrand

Gary Van Ostrand was a loving and devoted husband, father, and friend, but his favorite title was “Gampy.” He passed away peacefully on September 25th due to complications from sepsis, eager to reunite with his late wife, Cheryl. Gary was the son of Donald and Betty Van Ostrand, born in York, Nebraska on August 7, 1947. Growing up, he was always an avid reader, a favorite visitor of the local librarians from the age of 3 who pushed the limits of their collection before finishing high school. In addition to reading, Gary was a multisport athlete, though he claimed football as his favorite. Gary attended the University of Nebraksa for undergrad, then he continued his education at the University of Florida, pursing a PhD in political science. After graduate school, Gary relocated to Tallahassee to work in the state legislature. He recalled those days fondly and felt proud to be a part of a group who worked together to make change, but proudly avoided ever wearing a tie again after he left that role. Combining their passions and skills, Gary and his wife, Cheryl, opened a Scandinavian furniture store in Tallahassee, and they enjoyed the ability to set their own hours and “be their own boss.” They enjoyed travelling abroad, both for work and pleasure, and enjoyed sharing those experiences with their children. Gary rarely met an obstacle he couldn’t overcome. Beyond opening their store, he also beat the odds against stage 4 cancer twice and regained his mobility after a prolonged hospital stay to be able to spend more cherished quality time with his family. However, losing his wife 5 months ago proved to be too great an obstacle. The love they shared was truly beautiful, and his family is comforted knowing that they have been reunited at last. Gary and Cheryl have two children, Carly Autrey and Kelsey Van Ostrand, and are proud grandparents to Kamryn, Kaylee, Callie and Rhett. His children will always remember his ability to bring books to life when reading them out loud, his warm bear hugs, and his magical connection and natural way with animals. His grandkids will miss him blowing raspberries, sharing snuggles and naps, and his tickles. In accordance with his wishes, there will be a private, casual, combined celebration of life for both Gary and Cheryl on November 17th, 2024, and their ashes will be scattered together. In lieu of flowers, please hug your loved ones and tell them how much they mean to you as often as possible.
