June 18, 1943 - October 25, 2017
William L. Elrod, 74, affectionately known as “PeeWee,” passed away at his home surrounded by his loved ones on October 25th, 2017. PeeWee was born in Monticello, FL to Jesse and Hazel Sims Elrod on June 18, 1943. He moved from Monticello to Tallahassee as a small boy and his family settled on Wallis Street. He attended south side schools. In his youth he worked at the Jitney Jungle Food Store to help support his family with their personal needs. PeeWee loved his life on Wallis Street and made so many lifelong friends who never forgot him. He and his friends all loved each other and played ball together. And yes, probably mischievous. All it took was a bat, ball and a group of growing boys. One could say he had the “sandlot” life. In his days at Leon H.S., PeeWee made more friends. He was known for his contagious laugh, fun-loving personality and his red & white two-door Crown Vic. After graduation in 1963 he joined the Army and continued his service with the Florida National Guard until March of 1991. PeeWee met the love of his life, Peggy Sue Hancock and they had one child, Wendy. He was very focused on family and faithfully provided for their needs. He retired from the City of Tallahassee after 27 years of service. PeeWee loved family, FSU football, fishing, food, and a good laugh. He also loved God and Christ and studied the Bible. He attended meetings at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Jesse and Hazel Elrod; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Charlie Lindsey; brother, Clyde H. Elrod; and a nephew, Billy Lindsey. He leaves behind his wife, Peggy Elrod; daughter, Wendy L. Elrod Singler (Matt); grandson, Zachary L. Hale; granddaughter, Iona C. Hale; step-grandson, Sydney Singler; one aunt, Dot Connell; and a large number of cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Sunday, October 29th, 2017 at Wakulla Community Center, 318 Shadeville Rd., Crawfordville, FL 32327. The family will receive friends following the service. Lifesong (850.627.1111) is assisting the family with arrangements. The family would like to thank Big Bend Hospice for their dedicated service. A special thanks to our team of dedicated helpers, Lynn, Lesley, and Patti. Donations may be made to Crawfordville Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses or Big Bend Hospice.
