Mark Seganish

August 25, 1950 - November 18, 2021

Mark “Too Tall” Seganish died of natural causes on November 18, 2021. He was born to Stanley and Maude Seganish on August 25, 1950 in Washington D.C. He met the love of his life and wife of 51 years, Alexis (née Withers,) in high school in Falls Church, VA . He was in the Merchant Marines and attended Bard College then moved to Rochester, New York to study at the Rochester Zen Center after being raised in the Unitarian Universalist Church. Their three children, Noah, Zoe, and Wyatt were born there. The family moved to Tallahassee in 1978. Mark was employed by the Leon County Schools Maintenance Department and he was involved in labor unions. He was working class proud and an early member of the political punk rock scene. He then became the building maintenance supervisor at Gretchen Everhart School. There he developed a passion for working with the students and after retiring returned as a para-professional. Mark was an avid member of morning water aerobics classes for ten years where he developed many friendships. The morning routine was completed with breakfast at Whataburger with the regulars. Mark was a life-long record collector with an encyclopedic knowledge of music history and especially loved vocal harmony groups from the 40s and 50s. He was an aficionado and collector of classic film, science fiction, pulp novels, and toys and figurines from the 50s and 60s. Bird watching was another lifelong passion especially identifying rare migratory visitors. He enjoyed spending many hours in his backyard hanging with the birds and feeding his fat squirrels. A big fan of Fútbol. Mark will be remembered for his quick wit, incredible memory and kind nature; at 6’9”, he was sometimes called the “gentle giant”. Mark is survived by his wife Alexis and children Noah (Trish), Zoe, and Wyatt; granddaughters Chloë and Camille, sister Noel, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephew. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Gretchen Everhart Foundation or Southern Poverty Law Center. No funeral or memorial service is immediately planned.
