Margaret Mary "Peg" Doherty
June 19, 1946 - April 23, 2017
Margaret Mary “Peg” Doherty went home to God on April 23, 2017 after a short illness. Peg was born in Bronx, NY, the only daughter amid four brothers, to Cornelius B. and Margaret E. Landy Doherty in 1946. An avid reader who loved school, Peg is well known at the public library in every city where she has lived. She graduated at the top of her class at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx where she had a perfect score on the Verbal portion of the SAT (math was a different story). She would later graduate at the top of her class at Eden Theological Seminary. In her later years, she enjoyed completing the NYTimes crossword puzzles, often in ink. Her counseling work was focused on empowering students, especially women, at community colleges in western Pennsylvania, Lubbock, TX, and at Tallahassee Community College. As an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, Peg served churches in Lubbock, TX; Fort Lauderdale; Spring Hill, FL; the United Church in Tallahassee; and Gentle Shepherd MCC. Peg is survived by her loving husband, William Jordan Phelan; by her beloved god-daughter, Tanya Pace Prickitt; and her family, Jeffrey and Julie Grace Prickitt; by four brothers, Cornelius (Louise), Michael (Rosemary), Bro. Gerald FSM, and John Doherty (Sheila Womack); and by a host of friends in several states. A Singing Circle for Peg will be held at the Miccosukee Land Co-op on May 10 at 10:00 am. A Memorial Service for Peg will be held at the United Church in Tallahassee on May 20 at 4:00 pm. Peg's final arrangements are made under the care of Tholley Taylor at Lifesong Funerals, www.lifesongfunerals.com. ***In lieu of flowers (THE FAMILY DOESN"T WANT ANY FLOWERS), please consider a donation to organizations that empower women; such as Refuge House, family planning clinics, Heifer International, or your public library.***
